Rereading a Sherlock Holmes story (in His Last Bow) I noticed for the first time that Conan Doyle (or Dr. Watson) refers to railroad tracks as "metals" or "railway metals", not the familiar "tracks" or "rails".
A Google Books search for railway metals reveals two pages of results all before 1905.
Also, this made me realize where the Russian рельсы comes from.

The road map on actual Google Maps is older than the maps you get with their API (as seen on various mashup sites). Why?
